Good music is fuzzy, hard to discern until it lands softly. I wanted to gift a paraprosdokian to a fellow writer, but failing that, I want to make clear how wondrously illuminating this debut EP from Evangeline truly is. While not your typical TikTok nubile by any standard, the promise of this work is unassumingly brilliant, a poetic statement, revealing storytelling cordially nuanced with xylophones, bright guitar chords, and draped by wet, wave-like rhythms.
NYLON spoke with Evangeline Barrosse ahead of the release of her music video about her role in Winter Spring Summer or Fall, and how it feels to play another version of herself.
Once known under the stage-name Eva B. Ross, California singer/songwriter Evangeline’s debut EP Fuzzy, produced in-tandem with Dillon Casey (Weyes Blood), is soaked in amber dusks and as mystifying as it is nuanced. The six songs form a beautiful organism of alt-pop that nods to mid-century percussion and celestial vocals. “Ethereal” is a word that gets tossed around a lot, and I’m hesitant to label Fuzzy as such, but only because I want to avoid drifting up into the heavens and continue listening to these tracks down here on Earth. With her stage name gone, Evangeline has never been so accessible and her songs, from “Mystic” to “Neighborhood,” have never felt so personal. And, in terms of rising stars, her future has never been so bright.
Say hello — or maybe, wassup — to Evangeline, a vibe savior for all the millennial indie music nerds who’ve worn out their highschool-era mix CDs and need some new fuzzed-out alt-rock with a touch of headbang to fill the void during their workweek commute. This track, which, yes, refers to the Harry Potter canon, was written and produced in collaboration with Marinelli, an LA-based musical cohort of Billie Eilish and spill tab. The final product is a good-feel fuzz with a whistling garnish, worthy of a turn-it-up singalong. Bonus: fisheye fun in the music vid.
L.A. singer-songwriter Evangeline made a big splash with her viral debut single "Will" last year, but we firmly believe that 2023 is set to be an even bigger year for the rising star.
Check out "Will," the willowy debut single from Evangeline, fka Eva B. Ross. (There's a video that's gone viral, too, puzzling the songwriter herself.)
The Welcome to theLAnd compilation also features DāM-FunK, Greg Dulli of Afghan Whigs, Mia Doi Todd, G Perico, and Eva B Ross / Marinelli: “Be My Baby”
'Linoleum' is a scratchy piece of guitar pop, a piece of self-analysis that comes wrapped in a neat ear-worm melody.
As if to repay the favour, backing vocals come from Phoebe Bridgers, joined the always-listenable Eva B. Ross.
“…For now, I am listening, I am inspired, and I am coming to understand the purpose of my work. As for the shows? I’ll see them when I see them.”
Daily Dose is your daily source for the song you absolutely, positively need to hear every day
Una pieza repletas de detalles que nos deja ante una forma de hacer canciones donde el peso de las diferentes inspiraciones encerradas resulta muy bien equilibrado.
Singer-songwriter Eva B. Ross has accumulated the perfect toolkit to become the sharp and self-aware musician she is today, from growing up in LA with a musical family then diving into the History program at UCLA, all of the stars aligned to form her grasp on candid songwriting. Listening to Ross’ discog feels like you’re reading off of a freshly torn page of her diary, working through breakups and dancing at high school parties right there with her.
Eva’s light and airy vocals, perfectly accompanied by keyboards and guitar, seemed to transport listeners to somewhere much brighter and warmer, with just a tinge of the cold that waited outside.
Atwood Magazine is proud to be premiering the Celeste Barbosa-director lyric video for LA native Eva B. Ross’ “Spaceship”, a single from the singer’s debut EP Playlist for the Apocalypse, released last October. After completing a busy touring schedule, Ross is currently in the studio finalising her forthcoming EP.
On “Jim Beam Moonbeams” Eva B. Ross gives a nod to Nora Jones level seduction with her delicate vocals and jazzy instrumentation. Appropriately titled, it’s as if she’s whispering to a lover after a few glasses as the room starts to fade away around them. We might not be meeting new flames in the wild right now, but we can live vicariously through Eva, light some candles, and pretend.
A little sultry, a little silly, the video flashes subliminally between Ross’ dog day afternoon and her dark daydreams
Ross is readying to release a five-track EP, Playlist for the Apocalypse. The project plays up on that optimism of her earlier releases—it’s perfect for those six o’clock drives down to the ocean to catch the sunset, to maybe dip your toes in the water. “I set out to make something warm, fun and young with my friends that wasn’t trying to please anybody,” Ross says, “and I think, in the end, it sounds just like me… Thank God.”
Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter Eva B. Ross is back with beautifully dusky track “Jim Beam Moonbeams”.
After her prophetic debut album Playlist For The Apocalypse, released back in 2019 pre-covid, classically trained vocalist Eva B. Ross is back with another breezy guitar track.
Bleeding all the colors of jazz is Eva B. Ross, an enriching combination of Sara Barielles and Amy Winehouse.
Introducing Eva B Ross; Listen to Delicate “Jim Beam Moonbeams“ LA’s Eva B Ross today shares new single “Jim Beam Moonbeams,” A delicate, inviting track, “highlighting that parallel between lights fading in the evening and two people getting faded along with it.” Calling to mind the understated smooth blend of jazz, pop, and folk stylings of Natalie Prass
But first go straight back to relaxation mode. Eva B. Ross has the perfect "Jim Beam Moonbeams" in her luggage. Casually shuffling beat, a guitar and a fine melody. This is how good pop music works. Everything included in 2 minutes.
Eva B Ross in her soft sultry voice sings over the slow tap of the drums and seductive guitar lines, which paints a picture of a near-empty bar in The Midwest at 3 am with a small band led by Eva. The picture is very fitting, given lyrics like “Make me a drink, I think that you’re a little more buzzed than me.”
“The first thing I’m going to say is Eva B. Ross has a beautiful voice. The second thing I’m going to say is that she has released a gorgeous song in ‘Subliminal’.
‘Subliminal’ is a dreamy love song that is just perfect in every sense. Not an artist I was familiar with previously I think we could have a real star on our hands in Eva B. Ross. A kind of mix between Your Smith & Natalie Prass.”
Eva B. Ross will get heads shaking along to her second single, “Nick’s House.” Ross’s vocals are cool and breezy, delivered with confidence and an unmistakable swagger.
